About Us

Based at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and The University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, our lab researches the cytoskeletal biology that underlies immune cell function. We seek to understand how receptor signaling induces cytoskeletal rearrangement and the resulting forces control cell migration and activation. In addition to studying normal immune responses, we study cytoskeleton-based immunodeficiency diseases and seek ways to use what we’ve learned to improve immunotherapies. As an integral part of our scientific mission, we train young scientists for a range of STEM-related careers, providing support, mentorship, and growth opportunities.

Our Connections

  • Pennsylvania Muscle Institute (PMI)

The PMI is an interdisciplinary group of research investigators. Our goal is to discover the mechanisms of muscle function, muscle disease and motile biological systems through innovative and cross-disciplinary research, and to apply these discoveries to new therapies.

  • Penn Institute for Immunology (IFI)

The Penn IFI is a cross-departmental group of researchers who seek to advance the knowledge of the basic immunology of inflammation, autoimmunity, cancer, transplantation and infection and to translate this new knowledge to novel strategies for diagnosis, prevention and therapeutic intervention.

  • Penn Center for Engineering Mechanobiology (CEMB)

The Center for Engineering MechanoBiology (CEMB) is a multi-institution Science and Technology Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance the study of mechanical forces in molecules, cells, and tissues in plants and animals. Committed to inclusion, CEMB recruits, educates, and mentors individuals from all cultural, scientific, and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Immunology Graduate Group (IGG)

The IGG trains students interested in fundamental molecular and cellular biology of the immune system as well as translational immunology

  • The Cell Biology, Physiology, and Metabolism Graduate Group (CPM)

The CPM subgroup within the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program at Penn trains students interested in a wide range of topics, including cell motility, cellular metabolism, muscle physiology, intracellular trafficking and organelle function, membrane transport, signal transduction and cell cycle regulation.

  • PennPORT IRADCA

Penn Postdoctoral Opportunities in Research and Teaching is an NIH-sponsored training program for postdocs interested in careers that combine research and teaching, and who are committed to enhancing the diversity of the biomedical workforce.

  • Penn Biomedical Graduate Student Association (BGSA)

The BGSA is the coordinating student body charged with representing all students enrolled in Biomedical Graduate Studies to the University administration. BGSA also sponsors academic and social events geared toward the biomedical graduate student community.

  • Penn Biomedical Postdoctoral Council (BPC)

A volunteer organization run by and for postdoctoral scholars, the BPC seeks to foster a sense of community, provide resources for career and personal development, and provide a framework for representation on campus and in the local community for postdoctoral scholars.

  • Penn Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs (BPP)

The BPP office works to enhance the life of biomedical postdocs by providing programming on career and personal development, and administrative support to both mentors and postdoctoral appointees.
